In 2005, China Social Sciences Press published a set of collections named after individuals, including "Zizhongjun Collection", which included a total of 21 professional papers. In 2011, Guangxi Normal University Publishing House published a set of "Self-Selected Collections", which included the parts of my articles published in the past 30 years that I thought were worthy of long-term preservation, classified by content, a total of five volumes. Now, the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences has decided to publish a collection of essays for each honorary member of the Faculty of Social Sciences, and I am among them. Just over a year after the publication of the "Self-Selected Collection", it is unlikely that there will be a large number of new works, and duplication is inevitable. However, the number of copies of Zizhongjun is very small, and it is said that it has run out and is not intended to be reprinted, so some of the articles in this book can be regarded as reprints of that book. A small number of them are new works in 2012, but in view of the nature of books published by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, this book only includes academic articles related to the major, excluding essays and essays. This needs to be explained to the reader and forgiven. My shift from practical work to academic research is almost in sync with the reform and opening up. Since the past work was a foreign-related field and an international orientation, the major of research was naturally also an international issue, and American studies became the focus at the opportunity of the thaw of relations with the United States. The first published paper that caused considerable repercussions was on the origin of the Taiwan issue and the evolution of US policy after World War II. The article was translated into many languages, published in various newspapers and magazines, and later became a chapter in the book "The Origin and Development of U.S. Policy toward China: 1945-1950." So this book is no longer included. Since then, my research field has gradually broadened, especially after retirement, whether it is time and topic, I have gained greater freedom, further deepened my thinking, broadened my horizons, and in recent years, my interest has increasingly turned to Chinese and Western history and culture, based on the world, trying to explore between ancient and modern, Chinese and Western. In addition, since the publication of the research monograph "The Way to Scatter Wealth" (republished as "The Destination of Wealth") on the American Public Welfare Foundation, I have begun to have contact with public welfare undertakings and non-governmental organizations in my country, and have published a lot of discussions in this field. Therefore, this collection of essays is roughly divided into three areas: international, domestic and public welfare. Many members of the Honorary Faculty of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences must have published many works like me, and now the academy has decided to publish another anthology, which I speculate is to leave a concentrated academic record for the Academy of Social Sciences itself, and also for the old scholars who are nearing the end of their academic careers. Based on this understanding, this book selects articles that have stood the test of time, have a certain weight, and represent my academic thought. Essays, essays, and lyrical essays are not among them. It should be noted that most of the research results on international relations and American studies have been published in monographs. Except for a few empirical and informative papers, most of them express the author's own thoughts and opinions that are different from the popular views. Everyone has their own style of writing, and I have always followed the principle that the vernacular should be "clear as words", not good at writing high-level sermons, and also avoided quoting a lot of scriptures. Perhaps some articles seem less "academic" and some fall somewhere between essays and essays. But these are not improvised and casual works, but accumulated after a certain amount of thinking and reading on a certain issue. Man's mind is developing and changing. The articles are arranged in the chronological order in which they were originally published, giving a glimpse of the author's thought journey. What runs through is the spirit of independent thinking and truth-seeking, the "humanistic" view that I have formed over the years, and the coordinates of Chinese and foreign history and reality based on it. The "people" in my mind are living beings, not general, abstract, collective "people" or "nations". In recent years, there has been a growing sense of the pride and narrow nationalism that our people have grown under the slogan of "patriotism" (I now think it is more appropriate to call it "nationalism" than "nationalism") which is precisely the major obstacle to national rejuvenation. Therefore, the analysis of the rise and fall, pros and cons of other countries is also blind and biased. And the one-sided propaganda of some media is misleading and instigating, which is very harmful. Many of my ideas are formed in a targeted manner. As for conclusions on specific issues, I am fully aware of the divergent views that exist. Over time, some may prove to be predictable, and some may be overturned. It is not a waste of time for serious readers who are willing to discuss problems; For young students, if they do not mislead people's children, their wishes are enough.
