Based on the research perspective of the integration of regional economics and historical geography, this book takes the development and evolution of South Canal shipping in modern times as a clue, and discusses the role and status of South Canal shipping in the transformation of new and old means of transportation. New and old means of transportation have their own advantages and disadvantages, and there is both competition and cooperation between them, and the transportation network in coastal areas presents diversified and multi-level characteristics. After the cessation of inland water transportation, the South Canal shipping did not decline rapidly, which not only promoted the development of agriculture, industry and mining, handicrafts and commerce in the coastal areas, but also accelerated the pace of economic development and modernization of coastal towns.
