西南交通大学有着悠久的马克思主义理论教学与研究的历史和传统。作为一所以工科见长的大学，1952年在院系调整基础上建立马克思主义教研室，通过教育部分配从中共中央党校、北京大学、中国人民大学等校招收毕业生和学员组建起了第一批马克思主义理论课教师队伍。1978年招收马列主义师资班，既培养了一批学生，为马克思主义理论学科专业人才队伍建设打下基础，又教学相长，促使一批老师成为名师，享誉西南乃至全国，如1990年朱铃教授荣获国家级优秀教学成果特等奖，开了全国高校思想政治理论课教师获最高奖项的先河，为全国高校的思想政治教育工作者竖起了标杆。1984年学校在马列教研室基础上建立了社会科学系，进一步扩展了队伍、壮大了实力。1987年起开始招收思想政治教育本科专业。1991年率先获得马克思主义理论硕士学位授权点，系在川高校最早；1996年又在社会科学系基础上成立了人文社会科学学院，增办了相关的学科与专业，推动了学校人文社会科学的发展，提升了工科人才的人文素养和马克思主义理论水平。2006年初获得马克思主义基本原理和思想政治教育两个二级学科博士学位授权点，实现了学校百余年建校史上真正意义上的人文社会科学博士点的突破。2007年获批建立国家教育部辅导员培训与研修基地。2008年建立政治学院，主要负责马克思主义理论学科建设和思想政治理论课教育教学的任务；2015年调整更名为马克思主义学院，全面达到了一个机构、一支队伍和一个学科的要求，形成了从本科、硕士到博士教育完备的人才培养体系。
