In the course of human beings from agricultural economic era,across industrial economic era towards the era of knowledge economy,socio-economic environment has undergone significant changes.Peter F.Drucker (1993)who is Known as “the father of modern management” has made it clear that the most important factors of production for business will no longer be tangible assets such as capital,land or labour,but knowledge.In the knowledge economy,knowledge is becoming an important asset responsible for creating a competitive advantage (Quinn,1992;Sveiby,1997;Teece,1998).According to Morgan Stanley’s World Index,the average stock price is twice of the book value of enterprises worldwide (Edvinsson and Malone,1997).This gap shows that enterprise’s important hidden value “intellectual capital” is ignored.Intellectual capital is important because it has a significant impact on firm performance.Many literatures have affirmed that intangible assets or intellectual capital is the drive of firm value creation,and has a positive effect on firm performance (Edvinsson and Malone,1997;Stewart,1997;Sullivan,2000,et al.).Therefore,the creation,accumulation,use and management of intellectual capital will become the basis and key for improving firm performance and promoting sustainable development of enterprises.
The national “Twelfth Five-Year” Plan has explicitly put forward the specific objectives about the development of large and medium-sized enterprises with international well-known brand and core competence.According to statistics,in 2011,the operating revenue of China’s top 500 companies amounted to 32658241370000 yuan,up by 18.30% than in 2010.In 2012,the operating revenue of China’s top enterprise group have grown fastly,the revenue of top 500 companies grew 29.40%.It can be seen that,in the development of national economy,the enterprise group plays a decisive role.However,facing the rapid development of knowledge economy and the huge impact of financial crisis,the development and management of intellectual capital,thereby promoting intellectual capital on performance creation,is one of the important sources of power to enhance core competence and achieve the sustainable development of enterprise group.In the report to the Eighteenth National Congress of the Communist Party of China,Hu Jintao pointed out that,“We should follow a path of making innovation with Chinese features and take steps to promote innovation to catch up with global advances.We should increase our capacity for making original innovation and integrate innovation and for making further innovation on the basis of absorbing advances in overseas science and technology,and place greater emphasis on making innovation through collaboration.” In an increasingly complex international and domestic environment,taking into account the synergy of enterprise group,to reasearch the path of enterprise group’s intellectual capital on performance creation,resolve the role of transfer mechanism in the intellectual capital creating performance,and discuss the way to foster sustainable competitive advantage will be of great theoretical and practical significance in building an innovative country and creating national sustainable competitive advantage.
Based on a review of previous research about intellectual capital,syncretizing multidisciplinary knowledge of management,economics,statistics,law,and other knowledge,and applying multiple research methods of normative and empirical research,qualitative and quantitative research to achieve an organic coordination of theory and practice,this book researchs the path of enterprise group’s intellectual capital on performance creation combined transfer mechanism,analyzes the path of the influence of intellectual capital from a member on business performance of another member in enterprise group,and discusses the utilization and management of intellectual capital in enterprise group.The main contents of this book include the following several points.
Firstly,this book builds a logical connotative framework system of enterprise group’s intellectual capital on performance creation by reviewing the theoretical basis.It constructs the logical connotation of static intellectual capital from resource-based view,the logical connotation of dynamic leverage intellectual capital from dynamic capability theory,the logical connotation of transfer intellectual capital in enterprise group from transaction cost theory,and the logical connotation of intellectual capital on performance creation in the entire enterprise group from self-organizing theory.
Secondly,this book forms a framework of self-organizing process about enterprise group’s intellectual capital on performance creation by analyzing its mechanism of action in theory.It reviews the definition and structure of intellectual capital,and defines the concept of intellectual capital.On the basis of self-organizing theory,it believes that,intellectual capital system in enterprise group as an important driving force of the country’s economic development has the self-organization nature,enterprise group should draw on its self-organizing ability to create,leverage and manage its intellectual capital,thus contributing to promote self-organizing of intellectual capital on performance creation,achieve the creation,transfer and transformation of intellectual capital,and stimulate orderly evolution of enterprise group to a higher level.
Thirdly,this book clarifies a logical path of enterprise group’s intellectual capital on performance creation through logical reasoning of its path of evolution.It describes the objective measurement mode and subjective evaluation mode of intellectual capital,and analyzes an effect of two dimensions of transfer mechanism,i.e.transfer willingness and capacity and absorptive willingness and capacity.After a theoretical analysis,it proposes two basic paths of enterprise group’s intellectual capital on performance creation,including a direct path from intellectual capital to business performance and an indirect path from intellectual capital to transfer mechanism,to business performance.
Fourthly,with parent and subsidiary as example,this book evaluates intellectual capital from parent,transfer mechanism between parent and subsidiary,and subsidiary performance.In this book,field research is employed for analyzing current situation of enterprise group’s intellectual capital on performance creation.Through field research of Wuhan East Lake High-tech Zone and the interviews focusing on two companies,this book has a preliminary understanding of the practical status of intellectual capital,transfer mechanism and business performance,on the basis of those,it designs a questionnaire to test intellectual capital from parent,transfer mechanism between parent and subsidiary,and subsidiary performance.
Fifthly,with parent and subsidiary as example,this book tests the path of enterprise group’s intellectual capital on performance creation,verifies the influence of intellectual capital from parent on subsidiary performance.Based on questionnaire data from enterprise group,it tests the influence of intellectual capital from parent on subsidiary performance using structural equation modeling.The research indicates that positive interaction effects are established between human capital,structural capital and relational capital from parent,and they have a significant positive effect on subsidiary performance.However,the three dimensions of intellectual capital from parent aren’t significantly direct associated with subsidiary performance,the effect of intellectual capital from parent on subsidiary performance is completely mediated by both transfer willingness and capacity from parent and absorptive willingness and capacity from subsidiary.
Finally,based on theoretical analysis and empirical test,this book builds a mechanism to adjust enterprise group to transfer their intellectual capital.It believes that internal transfer and the establishment of transfer mechanism of enterprise group reflect a game process between transfer sides,appropriate transfer mechanism can be established to promote an optimal choice of evolutionary stable strategy both main game sides.Enterprise group should weigh three major mechanisms through which knowledge is shared across organizational borders:the market,hierarchy,and community/networks.It should build transfer mechanism of intellectual capital in enterprise group based on the premise of intellectual capital creation,intellectual capital transfer as a means,and aimed at intellectual capital transformation through management policies of enterprise group at the micro level and laws and regulations guide and policy coordination of government at the macro level.
This book has several contributions below:Firstly,associating self-organizing theory with intellectual capital on performance creation in enterprise group,it enriches the theoretical research of intellectual capital on performance creation.Secondly,using a combination of logical reasoning,field research,questionnaire,and statistical analysis,it analyzes a cross-impact of intellectual capital from the members of enterprise group on business performance both from theory and practice,and broadens the scope of intellectual capital research.Lastly,based on field research of transfer intellectual capital in enterprise group,including transfer mechanism in the research of enterprise group’s intellectual capital on performance creation,it verifies the role of transfer mechanism in a path of intellectual capital on performance creation in enterprise group,builds a mechanism to adjust enterprise group to transfer their intellectual capital,and provides a reference for the overall resource allocation of enterprise group,collaborative innovation and effective management and leverage of intellectual capital.
