抗日战争时期，是中国民众遭受沉重苦难并奋起抗争的历史关节点。在抗战时期，中国普通民众是如何维持日常生活的，他们的心态如何，他们是如何抵抗日本侵略者的？针对这些问题，本书采取民众的立场、全新的视角重写抗战时期中国的民众社会史。质而言之，本书是一部由下至上角度撰写的抗日战争史。全书共分两个部分。第一部分的核心问题，讨论的是抗战时期的粮食问题，即粮食供应对该时期民众日常生活及社会心理产生的深刻影响。该部分重点讨论粮食供应的极端不足及其对民众心理的影响，同时涉及日伪统治区、国民党统治区及抗日根据地的相关应对。第二部分探讨的核心问题，是抗日根据地民众对日军残暴侵略的感受及其采取的行动。其中包括民众如何应对根据地实施的社会改革及根据地针对民众心态和行动采取的对策。该部分考察的核心区域，是晋冀鲁豫边区的太行根据地。本书与以往著述的角度有所不同，力争为读者提供关于抗日战争史的新观察、新视野。

The period of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was a historical juncture for the Chinese people to suffer heavy and rise up to resist. During the Anti-Japanese War, how did ordinary Chinese people maintain their daily lives, what was their mentality, and how did they resist the Japanese invaders? In response to these problems, this book rewrites the history of civil society in China during the Anti-Japanese War from a people's standpoint and a new perspective. In essence, this book is a history of the War of Resistance Against Japan from a bottom-up perspective. The book is divided into two parts. The core issue of the first part discusses the food problem during the Anti-Japanese War period, that is, the profound impact of food supply on the daily life and social psychology of the people during this period. This section focuses on the extreme shortage of food supply and its impact on the psychology of the people, and also covers the relevant responses in the Japanese-ruled areas, Kuomintang-ruled areas, and anti-Japanese bases. The core issue explored in the second part is the feelings of the people in the anti-Japanese base areas towards the brutal aggression of the Japanese army and the actions they take. This includes how the people respond to the social reforms implemented in the base areas and the responses taken by the base areas to the mentality and actions of the people. The core area of this part of the investigation is the Taihang base area of the Jin-Hebei-Luyu border area.
