本书系统研究上自先秦、下至中华人民共和国诞生前这一历史长河中思想文化的发展状况，旨在从思想角度看中国文化，探讨中国文化发展演变的内在规律，既有同一时代内部思想文化的产生及其联系，又有不同时代间思想文化演变的逻辑行程。本书分上下编，上编从先秦、秦汉、魏晋、隋唐、宋元、明清六个时期分析中国传统文化内部自身演变规律，各个时段重要文化现象及内部之间、代际之间的变迁联系，下编从道咸时期、洋务运动时期、帝国末世、新文化运动前后、南京国民政府时期等五个阶段，对近代以来中国思想文化的发展嬗变及其特点进行梳理探究。在体例上，本书突破前人以各个思想家之思想来研究思想文化史的局限，弥补思想史、文化史分开研究及专题系列研究之不足，从社会、朝代层面，宏观把握每一个时代思想文化的概况及诸思想文化因子之间的内在联系，进而探研整个中国思想文化的生成机制和发展演变规律，相信对于中国思想文化的学习研究者有一定裨益。
