After coauthoring with Michael H Prosser and Mansoureh Sharifzadeh of Finding Cross-Cultural Common Groundin 2013 which was published by World Dignity Press of Germany,a strong echo has been reminding me of the intercultural communication competence of Chinese university students. Especially,globalization influences the society as well as education greatly.It seems that everyone in the world has to accept the new change brought by it.For example,in what way we should change in education to cater to the needs of globalization and how we cultivate the intercultural communication competence in Chinese universities facing the tough challenge from other countries.As a learner in Intercultural Communication,I feel an urgent responsibility to research on this field,such as comparison on the intercultural training between Chinese university students and foreign students.So this book covers the cultivation of intercultural communication competence globally.On one hand,many of my colleagues at home and abroad devoted their wisdom actively in this writing.On the other hand,many students at home and abroad were involved in questionnaires,interviews and inviting writings.Therefore,the book could cover globally in the field of Intercultural Communication Competence(ICC).

The first chapter of the book explores the common features of intercultural communication as well as the intercultural training in different cultural and regional settings.Particularly,a series of training programs are introduced with great detail to cultivate intercultural communication competence in America.Since the book focuses on university students,their reflections and thinking mirrors the best way of forming the competence.Some regional areas receive more attention than others,because of the limitations of our experiences.

The secondchapter emphasizes the intercultural communication competence globally.In other words,comparison and observation are given to the doings in the west.Starting from several dialogues with professionals,which offers a theoretical aspect toward this field,this chapter continues to focus on individual development in intercultural communication competence.

The third chapter goes toICC in China and Other Asian Countries.As my teacher and inspirer in intercultural communication,Michael H Prosser spent about ten years teaching in China,and developed cross-generational friendships with many young Chinese,particularly with me.There are also observations about the Semester at Sea around the world study tour related to Asia.Both Chapter one and three include essays,Semester at Sea observations,and public conversation.In the second section of chapter three,in order to compare with a better conclusion,it shows a picture of intercultural training in Asia and perspective from outsiders,especially those from the countries where the research on intercultural communication competence are mature both in theory and practice.

The fourth chaptercompares ICC of university students in Asia,China particularly.It is divided into three parts in this chapter,identity on self and individual intercultural understanding of youth in Asia,growing intercultural communication competence of Chinese students and dream of intercultural communication competence under globalization respectively.Chinese university students are the center in the research.It shows completely the great achievement of Chinese university students made in intercultural communication competence and personal reflections as well as the puzzle and expectation in this field.Thanks to the concerted cooperation in Chinese education,it goes without saying that we have made progress in ICC.However,we could achieve more if we combine the strategy of students’development with learning from other countries in ICC.

The fifth chaptersummarizes the background and future direction of ICC for Chinese university students.Confidence we have.So we have enough traditional teaching resource and advanced models from outside to welcome a bright future in cultivating ICC in Chinese universities.
