启蒙是难题却不是最大的难题，在“铁屋子”中启蒙才是人世间最大的难题；自有文字以来，作家想真实地抒写自己的内心是难事却不是最难的难事，当一个作家发现自己内心有“毒气”和“鬼气”且深怕“毒气”和“鬼气”传染给读者时，再想真实地抒写自己的内心，才是人世间最大的难事。鲁迅曾长期陷于“不可言说”却“不得不说”的“两难”困境中不可自拔。其实，结构并不只是一个沉默的容器，默默无言地承载着文本中人物、故事、情节、话语等叙事元素，它亦可以在不动声色中与话语并肩而立承担着表达的重任。结构“言说”的独特功能终于破解了鲁迅式的独特难题。

本著着力探讨鲁迅小说中多种类型的结构，如“铁屋子结构”、“序文结构”、“封套结构”、“反比例结构”、“空间结构”、“否定之否定结构”等等，其中重点提出并探讨“智情双结构”。每类结构不仅分别从鲁迅的启蒙理想、言说困境、读者意识等多维角度分析阐释，并且结合《狂人日记》、《阿Q正传》、《伤逝》、《示众》、《端午节》、《铸剑》等经典文本阐述论证。
