海防史是明史研究的重要课题，也是目前配合国家海洋强国战略实施的重点研究领域。以往的明代海防研究存在“重南轻北”、“重后轻前”现象。即关注东南沿海海防的成果很多，对明代中后期嘉靖、万历年间海防研究的成果众多，对明初及北部沿海防务的研究明显不足。本书把研究着眼点放在北方的山东半岛，弥补了这一空白。本书内容大体分三大部分，一是对不同时段海防形势的分析；二是对山东海防建设在明代不同历史阶段发展变化状况的具体分析；三是对海防建设与山东半岛地方经济社会发展的相互关系的研究以及其在清代中前期的变化。

The history of coastal defense is an important topic in the study of Ming history, and it is also a key research field that cooperates with the implementation of the national maritime power strategy. In the past, coastal defense research in the Ming Dynasty had the phenomena of "emphasizing the south over the north" and "emphasizing the rear over the front". That is, there are many achievements in focusing on coastal defense along the southeast coast, many achievements in coastal defense research during the middle and late Ming Dynasty, Jiajing and Wanli years, and obviously insufficient research on coastal defense in the early Ming Dynasty and northern China. This book fills this gap by focusing its research on the Shandong Peninsula in the north.
