皮革与人类的生活息息相关，是人类生产活动的产物。人类利用兽皮的历史遥不可考，为了生存、御寒、行走、遮体，早在原始社会就学会用兽皮护体、裹足。从自然使用到自觉利用，经过了漫长的历史演进。

近代以来，我国现代皮革工业开始萌芽，但动荡的时局阻滞了行业的发展。

新中国成立后，我国皮革行业克服了原料皮短缺等困难，大力提倡开剥猪皮，极大地满足了军事、工业和人民生活的需要。特别是改革开放后，我国皮革行业抓住机遇，快速发展，成为世界公认的皮革生产大国，制革、制鞋、皮衣、皮件、毛皮及制品等主体行业的产量稳居世界首位，皮革机械、皮革五金、皮革化工和鞋用材料等配套行业也取得了长足的进步。

我国皮革行业的辉煌成就，是全行业人筚路蓝缕，长期奋斗的结果，既有科技工作者的艰苦探索，又有普通工人的无私奉献，也离不开各级领导的运筹决策，无论是知名的还是不知名的，他们在行业发展史上留下了诸多值得后人永远铭记的感人事迹。

进入21世纪后，我国皮革行业发展到了转型升级的关键时期，既面临着发展机遇，也遇到了严峻挑战。在这样的背景下，中国皮革协会聆听行业呼声，组织策划编写了《中国皮革史》。本书回顾梳理了中国皮革行业的发展历程，总结发展的宝贵经验，以期发现并把握皮革工业的发展规律，对行业的未来发展有所裨益。

本书全方位、多角度描绘了我国皮革行业发展的历史画卷，生动再现了行业发展的艰辛历程。本书记述时间上不划一，下迄2010年止，以新中国成立后的发展为主。

本书采用篇、章、节结构，以事分类，横排竖写。全书分上下两卷，上卷为全国总体发展情况，下卷为各省区市、特色区域的发展及文献资料。全书设十篇，分别为历史沿革篇、现代篇、科教篇、管理篇、典型企业篇、代表人物篇、文化传承篇、地方篇、特色区域篇和资料篇。历史沿革篇和现代篇从整体上描述行业的发展过程，给读者展现的是一幅斑斓的行业全貌。科教篇、管理篇、典型企业篇、代表人物篇、地方篇和特色区域篇则着眼于行业的不同方面，精雕细刻，有利于读者详细了解具体内容。全书有总有分，详略相彰，从不同视角，审视行业发展的方方面面，每篇自成体系，便于读者翻阅。作为整体，篇与篇之间偶有重复，但侧重点不同，力求使内容浑然一体，而又脉络清晰。

本书历史跨度大，内容丰富，是一部百科全书式的工具书，是皮革专业人士的教科书，也是政府部门及研究机构的参考书，同时也是一本具有知识性、趣味性的科普读物。

由于机构变迁、部分企业关闭或破产，历史资料匮乏，以致书中部分内容不够全面，如军委后勤部所管辖的军用皮革产品历史资料缺乏，部分省份资料不全，有的历史人物及企业资料欠缺等，殊为遗憾。
