反映小城人生的小城小说是不同地域的具体小城之文学呈现，也是中华民族生活与文化的生动记录。作者认为，中国现代小城小说是由系列短篇结构而成的散文体小说，这些小说组合成了“中国的日夜”。每一地域的小城小说，通过对该地域的定点透视，在表现种种生活场景及价值意义的基础上实现了对该地域及其民众的整体俯瞰与理性剖析。从生态学、人类学的视角回望、检视各地小城小说，我们会发现中国人威蕤丛生的生命景观。小说中的各种物事、风情及风波、纠葛正是不同地域人生的自然展现，也是不同作家的个性表达。或许创作者各有怀抱，但其终极指向乃是对普通生命的尊重和珍视。

基于以上认识，本书将小城、文学小城、小城文学研究置于传统文化视阈、生态文化视阈中考察，通过对叙事文本的细腻寻绎、挖掘，对现代中国小城的生命形态、生存状况及其文化价值做一番深入、细致的考察、探索，以期对现代中国人的生存处境、生活样态和生命价值做系统、理性的思考，同时为现代小城小说独特的叙事艺术研究探索别一路径。

The Xiaocheng novel that reflects the life of a small city is a literary presentation of a specific small city in different regions, and it is also a vivid record of the life and culture of the Chinese nation. The author believes that modern Chinese small town novels are prose novels structured into a series of short stories, which are combined into "Chinese day and night". Through the fixed-point perspective of each region, the small city novel of each region realizes the overall overlook and rational analysis of the region and its people on the basis of expressing various life scenes and value significance. Looking back and examining the novels of small towns from the perspective of ecology and anthropology, we will find Chinese majestic life landscape. The various things, customs, storms, and entanglements in the novel are the natural manifestations of life in different regions, and they are also the personality expressions of different writers. Perhaps the creators have their own embraces, but the ultimate point is to respect and cherish ordinary life.
