在先秦道家的学术谱系当中，心观念的地位始终与道、气等观念相互纠缠，尤其是有关心气关系的思想通过稷下黄老学而对诸子产生广泛的影响。如果将先秦道家思想谱系内有关心观念本身理论构造的阐发称之为“心论”，则其基于此种理解之上的围绕心观念建立的修养方式则可直接利用原有的术语称之为“心术”，由这两个互为表里的层面出发，大体可见先秦道家心观念思想的逻辑构造，他们关注人心的根本目的在于精神性的提升与转化，而前者作为得道的场所，在与诸如魂、魄、精、气等相关观念的复杂关系中显示出了非凡的深度。本书在揭示这种深度的同时，聚焦于修身工夫问题，辨析心与相关诸观念之结构性关系，最终服务于对哲学之共性而非某种特殊的“中国性”的揭示。
