范晔有些才华，因卷入刘宋皇族内讧而被杀。其所处之南朝著史风气兴盛。受家学影响，其《后汉书》重儒术，崇王道，尊仁政，颂忠节，要“正一代之得失”。全书体例及人物，承自《东观汉记》及诸后汉史著。范晔吸收前人成就，化为己用，新设类传，人物类型的丰富性、人物形象的感染力直逼《史记》；采用“牵连法”，使合传更像一个整体；人物传记，虽头绪较繁，但前后关联，杂而不乱。叙述语言简中见密，简中见丽，序、论为其亲笔，倾向骈偭化，颇具婉转顿挫之气韵。这与宋初文学风气、风格颇相一致，反映出南朝文史创作的相互影响与借鉴。

Fan Ye had some talent and was killed for his involvement in infighting in the Liu and Song imperial families. The southern dynasty where it is located is prosperous. Influenced by family studies, his "Book of the Later Han" emphasized Confucianism, honored the way of kings, respected benevolence and government, and praised loyalty, and wanted to "correct the gains and losses of the generation". The style and characters of the book are inherited from the "Records of the Eastern View of the Han" and the history of the Later Han Dynasty.
