本书以道统为主线，用中西比较的视野，对中国从古至今的学术思想进行梳理，发掘贯穿其中的思维方法、价值观和对理想社会的构想。解释人与自然、人与社会、人与人关系为主要内容的天道观，是中国学术思想的显著标志。西周时期，就形成了“神灵之天”“道德之天”“自然之天”的天道观，连同民本思想等作为古代思想遗产，为孔、墨、老三哲所继承。不同天道观相互渗透、互相影响，产生更加精彩纷呈的思想成果。
从中外交流的大历史观看，中国学术思想可划分为三个千年：第一个千年是从西周到魏晋玄学的纯粹本土思想；第二个千年是从佛学东来到融合儒释道的宋明道学；第三个千年是从“隆庆开关”为标志的西学东渐，直至现在。五四运动以来，传统中国道统开始崩塌，马列主义进入中国，诞生了领导中华民族伟大复兴的核心--中国共产党。传承中华优秀文化、融合人类优秀文化的一种新文明形态已经在华夏大地悄然孕育。
This book takes Taoism as the main line and uses the perspective of Chinese and Western comparison to sort out China's academic thought from ancient times to the present, and explore the thinking methods, values and ideas for an ideal society that run through it. The Heavenly Taoist Temple, which explains the relationship between man and nature, man and society, and man and man, is a prominent symbol of Chinese academic thought. During the Western Zhou Dynasty, the Heavenly Taoist Temple of "the Heaven of Gods", "the Heaven of Morality" and "the Heaven of Nature" was formed, together with the people-based thought, as an ancient ideological heritage, inherited by Kong, Mo and Lao Zhe.
