中华人民共和国成立以来，随着历史地理学的发展，介绍历史地理学及其分支学科的进展、动态和研究现状的论著颇多，除《中国史研究动态》每年刊载的年度动态之外，还有大量的多年度的研究综述，较早的有黄盛璋、钮仲勋合撰的《近年我国历史地理研究的进展》8432295，谭其骧、葛剑雄的《回顾与展望——中国历史地理学四十年》8432296等，较为切近的则有葛剑雄与华林甫合著的《五十年来中国历史地理学的发展》8432297《二十世纪的中国历史地理研究》8432298等；各子学科的动态、综述也颇为丰硕，如《中国历史地理论丛》2011年第3 辑组织的“2001—2010年中国历史地理研究回顾与评论”专栏。不仅如此，华林甫曾将其撰写的历史地理的年度动态与其他一些学者撰写的研究综述合编为《中国历史地理学五十年》8432299；华林甫于2009年出版的《中国历史地理学·综述》8432300对清末至2003年间，我国历史地理学及其分支学科的发展情况和取得的成果进行了全面的、高水平的综述，且详细介绍了大量具有代表性的论文；张伟然于2017年主编出版的《历史与现代的对接——中国历史地理学最新研究进展》8432301更是简明扼要地介绍了历史地理学以及下属学科的发展脉络，尤其强调了我国历史地理学取得的众多具有影响力的成果，且对今后的发展进行了展望。由于这些高水平的研究综述的存在，因此如果本书仍以对历史地理学及其分支学科的发展历程以及重要观点和成果的介绍为主题的话，已无太大学术价值。

我国的史学有着源远流长的历史，有着自己的传承和特点，与西方史学相比，虽然我国古代史学演进的背后也有着理论和方法的变化，但总体上缺乏对理论和方法自觉的深入探讨和分析。近代以来，在西方学术的影响下，我国史学在逐渐近代化和与世界学术研究接轨的过程中，取得了颇为丰硕的成果，但依然缺乏真正意义上对理论和方法的深入研究，尤其是缺乏对涉及整个学科根本的理论的探讨，且近年来颇有影响的一些理论、方法和学派其背后都能看到西方史学的身影，我国史学的繁荣更多地依然表现在具体成果上。

历史地理也是如此，而且与历史学的其他学科不同，历史地理学实际上应属地理学的分支学科8432302，其中涉及的理论和方法除了历史学的之外，更多的应当是地理学的，但由于我国历史地理学的缘起及其后来的发展道路，使得我国的历史地理学与地理学之间长期以来存在严重的隔阂，历史地理学的研究中缺乏对地理学理论和方法的了解、吸收和运用。而且从目前的研究来看，虽然大多数历史地理学者都认为在学科属性上历史地理学应当属于地理学，但在实际研究中，我国的历史地理学受到传统史学的影响要远远大于受到地理学的影响。不仅如此，可能是受到自身学术背景的影响，以往我国历史地理学中的大部分理论，缺乏真正的哲学思考，与西方那种能改变学科发展方向的理论相去甚远，大多只能算是一种认知，或者只是对常识、经验的归纳总结。由于缺乏对于理论和方法的探讨，虽然近年来历史地理学的研究队伍迅速发展、学术成果日益丰富，但无论是学科整体还是各个分支学科已经长期未能产生出具有突破性、在历史学或者地理学领域有着广泛影响力的成果，而且存在的问题也越来越多、越来越突出，甚至某些分支学科的根基都受到了动摇。与此同时，无论是在史学中还是在地理学中，历史地理学都有着被日益边缘化的趋势。

学科繁荣的背后，危机已经隐隐浮现。

基于此，本书试图在以往学术综述的基础上，梳理当代历史地理学及其各个分支学科研究方法的发展历程，指出其中存在的问题，并对今后的发展方向进行思考。此外，为了叙述和讨论的完整性，本书也会对一些有着重大影响力或者具有代表性的学术成果进行介绍和评价，同时为了弥补“广博”上的缺陷和方便历史地理学初学者的使用，在每章之后都会罗列相关领域的一些推荐书目以便查阅。

还需要说明的是，本人才疏学浅，难以对理论进行深入分析，因此主要的讨论都集中在方法层面上，以指出问题为主。而且，本人主要从事城市历史地理、古地图的研究，对政区地理稍有涉及，无法对历史地理的所有领域一一进行评述，无法做到面面俱到，因而本书的评述着重于历史人文地理的某些领域，对于历史自然地理则只能点到为止。
